110 Stories

Blending art and technology, 110 Stories enables you to use your Android phone to rediscover lost viewpoints and share memories about the 30 years the Twin Towers stood in Lower Manhattan. A radar display instructs you to point your phone at the site of the former Twin Towers, then uses augmented reality to render in the towers’ profile in a pencil-like drawing. You then take a composite photo with the towers accurately depicted in size, orientation, and location. Finally, you are asked to comment on what the photo means to you. Completed stories are submitted to a repository and map located on the 110 Stories web site.

Doesn't work Unfortunately, this app doesn't seem to work. I had a clear view of the NYC skyline on a sunny day with strong GPS signal, and it misplaced the towers far off to the left and would not let me publish my story. I had all the proper credentials in place but I got an error telling me only PNG, GIF, or JPG files were allowed. Well, the picture I took from my phone was in the JPG format so I don't know what went wrong. I tried multiple times and I'm not sure what to think. I guess it's broken or it doesn't like the latest version of Android or perhaps my phone (Galaxy S4)?

Really disappointing. Ok, so you can't take pictures when you are too far away. But it also seems to not allow one to even view other's pictures and stories either, if you are to far away. The targeting device doesn't remotely point to New York. From there, there are no instructions on what to do next. So, it would seem that this app won't do anything, outside of the 40 mile radius. We should at the least be able to see what others have contributed. WHY ARE ANDROID APPS SO TYPICALLY DEVOID OF OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS!!?
