# Arithmetic Tutor - Subtraction

Is your child having problems with math in school; specifically, subtraction of whole numbers? If so, we have the perfect Android App that can help.

"Arithmetic Tutor - Subtraction" is an Android app that helps grade school students to learn and master the subtraction of whole numbers. The student selects the options for the exercise, such as the number of digits for each operands, whether to enable borrow, and number of problems in each exercise. The app then randomly generates the operands for each problems in the exercise based on the options selected. The student is given the opportunity to solve it, by entering intermediate result such as borrow and difference by simply dragging and dropping digits, and the app will check the answer. If the answer is incorrect, the student can either try again, or ask the app to show where the mistake(s) is/are, or ask the app to show the steps to solve the problem. All instructions are given verbally (i.e. the app talks to the student), with the option of displaying the verbal instructions as text. Unlike a human tutor, this app is infinitely patient, so the student will never feel intimidated. The score for the exercises are recorded, and can be retrieved to find out the student's progress.

The method used in this app employs the technique sometimes called compensating, which is easier to learn than the traditional method of regrouping. The idea is that adding and subtracting the same number will not change the result of the subtraction. But even more important is not doing the subtraction of the borrow immediately, which avoids the cascading effect of borrowing from higher places, as in the problem of (2000-1234). This is similar to addition where the carry is not added to the next place immediately until you are adding the digits for the next place.

This app is not a mindless video game. However, your kid will love it because he/she will have fun using it. And you will see improvements very quickly.

Needs mini borrowed number This is a paid app, which is why Ill criticize it. When you borrow, you must place the borrowed value below the difference sign and tens or hundreds (different but fine). However, when you borrow a tens, the ones SHOULD display a mini number above the ones automatically. Nothing visually reminds the young learner that the ones is now different. For example changing from a 4 to a 14. PLEASE FIX.

Not impressed!! Just purchased, was looking forward to using after it downloaded, but was disappointed. The layout to be fair is good the numbers you have to subtract are easy to see, but when u want to enter the answer, you have to drag and drop the numbers at the bottom of the screen which are that small youre fingertips needs to be the size of a matchstick., Everytime you try and drag the number,a window opens up asking if u want to cancel or check the answer. If the user interface was bigger at the bottom of the screen then this app would get the thumbs up from me. Would be a good app if your phone had a stylus, but i own an x10 mini. Hopefully thre developer can come up with some sort of fix!
