Tested it in the field I downloaded the CalTopo map and then selected areas of the Sierras that I plan to hike in this summer and then saved them. It's a little tricky trying to find the maps that I've named and stored, but I've been able to figure it out. I studied my saved maps and then created waypoints. Thereafter, I went to Whitney Portal and hiked to Lone Pine Lake. I shut off my data and put the phone in airplane mode, then opened the app and my saved map. I was able to pinpoint my location on the trail, worked perfectly!

I used the free version last weekend on a trip to Missouri Lakes trail in CO. I downloaded an area map section (tiles) so that I could use my phone as a GPS while out of cellphone service area. The app works fantastic. I turned airplane mode on and gps on. The app sips battery while in use, though of course uses more than airplane mode. However, I turned off location/GPS whenever I was not using the app. Very accurate in following the downloaded offline topo maps. It's great to have track info on the device so I can see distance traveled, altitude profile, etc. I've gone ahead and purchased the Pro version because I was so impressed compared to my older dedicated GPS device, a Delorme PN-40. It's the most I've ever paid for an app, but it's literally worth more than my old $350 Delorme. That screen was always annoyingly small and my eyes are not getting any better. This $12 app does everything and more that the Delorme device did. And more. Super simple to download mostly free open source or government (USGS etc) map downloads for US. Not sure about other countries.

I have been testing this extensively in a variety of New Mexico and colorado wilderness. It is a fantastic tool. I carry my phone as a camera might as well double its utility. Since discovering this app i have not used my handheld gps. Can get about 3 days on a charge. Then swap batteries or pull out the solar charger for those multi day trips.

Essential for the Outdoors I can take a bearing and use a map and compass, but BackCountry Navigator puts my dot on the map and keeps all kinds of stats. I don't go out without caching maps and charging up!
