Battery Life: While we optimize our code to cut down on power requirements, continued use of the GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. For longer dayhikes or overnight trips, we suggest packing lightweight battery packs to charge the phone.

User reviews of Backpacker GPS Trails Pro
The app functions well enough, my only qualm was that after I downloaded it I realized that the same functionality was available in other free apps.

Used in the Grand Canyon on a solo hike. Worked great! Download your maps first...

Unreliable Crashes each time in the middle of trip tracking. Results in loss of trip data and you get that "all for nothing" feeling. Poorly implemented in app purchases. Galaxy Note 3.

Works as it should Works great. No issues what so ever. Can be improved but like the app and going online after hikes to look at stats and trip progress details. Worth the $5 for sure. Great companion to map compass and altimeter. Wouldn't solely rely on tho.

Works sort of. Constant in app purchase nags are annoying. Slow scrolling and being hit up for more money for more features even after purchasing pro version are the downsides. Feel like I am being nickle and dimed to death. Must be restarted after freezing occasionally

completely unreliable I paid for the "pro" version and have tried to use it several times. Most of the time I get an error message "unfortunately backpacker gps has stopped working." I have tried uninstalling and re-installing, which does not help. When it does work, the tracking is highly erratic, showing a very inaccurate map. The only stats it shows, if any, are time and distance. The distance is incorrect because the mapping is so far off. I have run it simultaneously with MyTracks and MapMy Hike to double check and on known routes and it is completely off. The interface is not intuitive. You have to go through several screens to start tracking. Total waste of $4.99, plus time and aggravation of trying to use it.
