Field Book

BACKUP DATA BEFORE UPGRADING

The Android™ Field Book is a project created by the Poland Lab with the goal of making a useful program to take notes on field research plots. While many attempts to create a digital note-taking tool released in the past, most of these were either simple spreadsheet applications that didn’t allow for fast and flexible data entry or were created for proprietary and expensive hardware, making it inaccessible or uneconomical for most research groups.

By working with an open-source platform and relatively inexpensive hardware ($200-$250), we hope to create a program that will not only allow researchers the ability to replace hard-copy field books (alleviating the possibility of transcription errors), but allow current technology to be used in environments where cost and inflexibility have been limiting factors. In addition, the program is open source, allowing for other groups to customize the application to their specific needs.

Our flexible, open-source, note-taking program. Input data can be type numeric, percentage, categorical, date, Boolean, text, or Audio. These data types can be used for a variety of traits.

Development of FieldBook was supported through the Collaborative Crop Research Program of The McKnight Foundation (http://mcknight.ccrp.cornell.edu/)

NOTE: This application is only currently compatible with 7" or larger tablets and will not display correctly with smaller screens.
