Description
Game designer and author Jane Jensen set a high mark for classic point-and-click adventure games in the '90s with the much-adored Gabriel Knight series, so it's no surprise that her latest effort, Gray Matter, is infused with an incredible sense of atmosphere and an enticing, quirky story that unfolds slowly across eight lengthy chapters. While that's enough to keep most adventure game aficionados glued to their keyboard for the long haul, a steady smattering of weak puzzles detracts from the experience through a hefty portion of the game.
Gray Matter's dark tale oddly blends elements of the supernatural, stage magic, neuroscience, and Ivy League college life into a slow-cooking plot revolving around a pair of peculiar protagonists. During a motorcycle trek to London to pursue a career as a vagabond stage magician, Sam Everett suffers a bike breakdown at the doorstep of Dr. David Styles – a troubled neurobiologist who lost his wife in a tragic car accident and can't shake his obsession with making contact with her from beyond the grave. Posing as a prospective assistant, Sam finds refuge in the gloomy mansion and gets roped into helping Dr. Styles experiment on college students while also solving elaborate riddles in an effort to gain entry into a secret society of magicians called The Daedalus Club. The interplay between Dr. Styles' eerie research and Sam's drive to succeed as a magician keeps the story moving along with some intriguing twists.
