It has been more than 5 years since the “Hong Kong Ferry” App published on the Google Play Store. The number of users, as well as user comments, continued to grow in the past years. We believe that it is time for us to stop burning our money unconditionally.
On the basis of commercial operations, as we are facing high development and maintenance cost, as well as extremely low advertisement revenue and paid-user intake rate, we now announce that we will re-position the “Hong Kong Ferry” App. We plan to continue operating the “Hong Kong Ferry” App by charging a reasonable amount of annual fee, to provide a mobile App that meets the expectations of our paid users, instead of exhausting our resources to chase the group of free users that have ever-changing requirements and non-stop complaints.
From now until 15 July 2015, we open the “Hong Kong Ferry App User Survey” to all users and collect user feedback and suggestions on the Hong Kong Ferry App. Depends on the results, we might decide to release the new Hong Kong Ferry App version 5.0 this summer, or to terminate the development of this App immediately.

As at 23 June 2015, we have 38 paid users. We have over 100,000 advertisement banners displayed per month in average, with less than 1% click-through rate.
If we were to continue our development work, the new “Hong Kong Ferry App 5.0″ would have the following major changes:
• We do not go chasing download figures
Due to high operation costs, we would produce an App that satisfies 100 paid users, instead of burning our cash irrationally to chase 10,000 ad-blocking and chronic non-paying complainers just for the high download rate.
• We let paid users direct the road map of the App
We will introduce new features to let our paid users send us feedback and suggestions in a more convenient way. We will improve our communications with our paid users to improve the quality of the App.
• We will impose features cut on the free (Ad-support) version
While we will continue to provide basic ferry service information to non-paying users through the Ad-supported free version, all extra features will be provided to paid users only.
• We will adjust the annual subscription rate
To show our appreciation to the existing paid users, we will keep charging the current renewal rate as long as the current annual subscription is set to be renewed automatically. New users who pay for the upgrade after the release of the Hong Kong Ferry App 5.0 will have to pay at an updated annual rate.
In case we conclude from the survey that we should terminate the development of the Hong Kong Ferry App, we will issue a full refund to all existing paid users. We are able to do that because the amount concerned is just less than HKD$400.
Here we hope that while the Hong Kong people are fighting for annual salary increment, they could realize and agree that:
