About the Massachusetts Association of REALTORS®
The Massachusetts Association of REALTORS® is a professional trade association for licensed real estate practitioners and serves as the parent organization to the state's 16 local REALTOR® associations. Membership in the organization is voluntary and consists of both residential and commercial agents and brokers as well as industry affiliates. MAR's membership currently consists of approximately 22,000 real estate licensees, and only MAR members are authorized to use the trademark term, REALTOR®.
The state association's headquarters is located in Waltham, MA. To contact us you may call 781-890-3700, contact us through our website, or write us at 256 Second Avenue, Waltham, MA 02451. Our hours of operation are Monday-Friday, from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
The term REALTOR® is an exclusively registered designation for members of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) which is comprised of some 1,000,000 members in the United States. Only those licensed real estate professionals who have joined the NAR, the Massachusetts Association of REALTORS® and their respective local REALTOR® association may use the registered trademark term REALTOR®. Massachusetts REALTORS® must adhere to a strict, national Code of Ethics, and currently account for the most active 25 percent of the more than 60,000 brokers and agents licensed to practice real estate in the Commonwealth.
On behalf of property owners, the Massachusetts Association of REALTORS® actively promotes public policy initiatives which preserve private property rights, expand home ownership opportunities, and increase members' ability to successful conduct their business. A strong advocate of equal opportunity and housing for all persons, the association also administers educational training, professional standards services, and ethics cases to ensure its members not only understand, but adhere to state and federal laws and the REALTOR® Code of Ethics.
The MAR exists to provide an environment that positions the REALTOR® as the primary source for real estate services, promotes a positive professional image of the REALTOR®, and advocates preservation and enhancement of the rights to own, use and transfer real property.
Working cooperatively with local REALTOR® associations and the National Association of REALTORS®, the MAR offers numerous programs and services designed to promote the business interests and career goals of real estate practitioners. MAR's educational programs, publications and online news services offer real estate licensees the opportunity to learn new, cutting-edge business skills that will increase their earning potential. The Massachusetts Association of REALTORS'® legal assistance programs provide brokers with timely advice on legal and ethical matters while reducing one's exposure to liability. Additionally, the MAR's government affairs efforts help to advance public policy initiatives that seek to minimize housing expenses and lower agents' business costs.
As stated in the Associated Press Stylebook, the first "R" in the word "REALTOR®" should always be capitalized because it is a trademark term reserved exclusively to make reference to members of a local association of REALTORS®, as well as the State and National Associations.
