Open Prayer Book

Open Prayer Book

Recently switched to new "Solus" publisher. Had been downloaded about 7000 times, with an average review of 5/5.

Open Prayer Book collects together prayers and liturgies from across the web and allows you to view them full screen on your Android device (as well as schedule daily reminders).

It has several key advantages over simply using the web browser in your phone:

★ It contains a curated collection of prayers and liturgies for easy access.
★ You can schedule reminders.
★ You view the prayers on full screen.
★ If you find or create a prayer resource you can share it with other users of Open Prayer Book.

How to use Open Prayer Book

The first thing you'll want to do is add some prayers/liturgies. You can do this by going to the "Prayer Book" tab and hitting the menu button. Either select "Add Liturgies from list" to choose from curated collection of liturgies or select "Add custom liturgy" to add your own liturgy.

Once you've added some liturgies, just tap on it to open it in the full screen viewer.

Advanced features

By holding down on a liturgy to bring up the context menu you can schedule a reminder (which will use the Android notification system to remind you about the liturgy/prayer).

In addition you can edit it, submit it for possible inclusion in the next update of Open Prayer Book or delete it.

Many liturgies/prayers work best in landscape mode (or perhaps on a tablet) so you might want to rotate your phone at this point.

Some reviews (from when published under Amimetic name):

Glen (September 13, 2011)
Brilliant. The scheduler is very handy. Clutter free interface keeps reading focussed. Very handy when travelling. I like this a lot.

Andrew (December 31, 2010)
Nice app. Simple but effective.

Recent changes:
v 3.0

Updates for Android 4.4 (including 'immersive mode') and various small improvements for all versions.

Quite a few new liturgy links. Thank you to everyone who submitted something. There were a few I didn't include because they didn't seem to work so well on tablets/phones. Remember you can add your own custom links if you don't like my selection!

v2.5

Many new liturgy links.

Small changes to work better on tablets such as Nexus 7 (while still working with smaller and older devices).

Good but could be better It would be so helpful if the daily Eucharistic readings were also included. Also the formatting of the CW liturgies is not good, and impossible to increase the font size.

Helpful content with a programming flaw The Android back button does not exit the prayer screen back to the main app menu except after pressing save. (KitKat on Nexus 7)
