The Southern Decadence Event Guide is a virtual guide to planning your activities at Southern Decadence, which is held each Labor Day weekend in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The app features all the major publicized events, including the tours and gatherings sponsored by Decadent Ducks and the Bourbon Street Pub. The events schedule will be dynamically updated during the week in the event of any changes in event times or locations, and it lets you create "My Schedule" so that you don't miss any of the action!
The Southern Decadence event, or "Decadence" as it is known by its participants, is an annual week-long event held by and for the gay and lesbian community. It has attracted as many as 250,000 participants in past years and features numerous street parties, dances, drag shows, tours, and other events. Decadence climaxes with bead tossing during a parade through the French Quarter on the Sunday before Labor Day, helping it earn its nickname as the "Gay Mardi Gras." Most of the events take place in or around the French Quarter neighborhood of New Orleans, although many events involve trips throughout the region, including a Vampire tour, swamp tours, cooking demonstrations, and bicycle tours of the famed "Garden District" and historic Jackson Square. Many of the events include fundraisers for Gulf Region charities, especially those serving people in the HIV/AIDS community who continue to struggle in the economic hard times following the Katrina disaster.
