Interesting proof of concept. Worked between Nexus 5 phone and Nexus 7 tablet.

Nexus 4 -> 48000Hz Sampling Freq. Nexus 4 does not cope 44100Hz sampling frequency well! Hence your sampling frequency gives bad aliases! You have to go up to 48000Hz sampling frequency (but keep the carrier freq). Otherwise the effect is spoiled. I know, other devices do not master 48000Hz at all... but believe me, nexus 4 does! Then it works fine there too!
