With the first release of this you could only play one off turn based squad/tactical battles in X-Com style with action points and even opportunity fire. This was really good fun for genre fans but the lack of progression made it feel kind of pointless. They've just released v2 which adds a campaign mode with bases and research etc on a geoscape. So now you can shoot down the UFO's and send your troops out to kill the Aliens. X-Com fans will love it and it's good to see such a large content update.

X-Com: Essence Distilled This game, owing to its simplified visual design, distills the gameplay of the original X-Com very effectively. Turn based phase controls are tight and well executed (though some of the mechanics are simplified, as units can't panic or pick up grenades, etc.). Items desperately need more in-game descriptions (took me three games to figure out what a "green" was), and the difficulty curve ramps up quickly. Overall, great game!

Boffo. A good one. I would like to have seen some more options in the tactical game, kneeling, the ability to throw stuff for instance. This is a great game, well worth a few pennies.

Would it have killed them to make more/better tutorials? And/or even the simplest of narratives? Has a number of things going for it, but after spending a lot of time and effort to figure out all its ins and outs of the game (as much by trial and error as anything else, as the online wiki is far from thorough), I suddenly found myself beyond frustrated--I was bored. And it's not like the story was keeping me hooked.

Actually a pretty decent homage to the XCOM series Research and manufacturing are kind of oversimplified, hence the economy aspect of the game is considerably less important, but still I can recommend the game for casual players.
