In Aikido Video Sketches 2: Solo Training Exercises we have collected together 31 of these preparatory exercises that are commonly practised in Aikido dojos all over the world.
For each exercise there is an illustrated description providing step-by-step instructions, general background information and key points, and a demonstration in one or two video clips, two clips where viewing the exercise from a different angle can help to clarify its performance. They include breathing (kokyu) exercises, stretching, movement forms (tai sabaki) and strike (uchi) practice, and they are illustrated by 40 video clips and over 100 still images.
The thing that they have in common is that they can all be performed solo, that is, without the need for a partner. Students of all levels of experience can benefit from these exercises: beginners who need to condition their bodies for Aikido practice; more experienced students who may not have seen some of the exercises before or understood their significance; and instructors who may want to add some of these exercises to their repertoires.
The exercises are presented in the order that they might be practised in a class, that is starting with slow, simple movements and progressing to more physically demanding ones.
The exercises are in the following categories:
•	Breathing exercises (kokyu)
•	Rowing exercises and shaking (torifune and furitama)
•	Arm swinging and Bai Bi
•	Shoulder loosening/relaxing
•	Back twist and bends
•	Leg and hip stretching and strengthening
•	Wrists flexibility and strength
•	Fingers loosening
•	Body movement (tai sabaki)
•	Attack practice (uchi)

Recent changes:
Improved interface.
Video controls can be hidden.
Image definition improved.
Help screen added.

3: Aikido 31 Count Jo Kata

AIKIDO VIDEO SKETCHES LIBRARY
3: The 31 Count Jo Kata
The 31 Count Jo Kata (San Ju Ichi Jo No Kata), is perhaps the most well-known of the Aikido Jo katas, and the most well-known version of it is that of the late Morihiro Saito who learned it from Morihei Ueshiba, the Founder of Aikido.
The kata is presented as two video clips of the complete kata, each from a different angle, single video clips of each movement and text descriptions illustrated with still images. The video clips can be looped, played in slow motion and viewed frame by frame.
The kata elements include attacking movements and defensive movements appropriate to your intentions and to those of your imaginary opponent who also has a jo.

It is said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’. If that is true then it is probably also true that a video is worth a thousand pictures. Here you have words, pictures and videos: the best of all worlds. The unique format of this product, the combination of text, images and controllable video clips, was designed to provide the optimum medium for appreciating and understanding the performance of a range of Aikido training forms.

The unique sketched format of the images was deliberately chosen to emphasize the action rather than the demonstrator.

Recent changes:
Addition of slow motion option.
Addition of Help page for the app controls.
Text illustrations placement improved.

Russian Roulette+ FREE!

Great party and drinking game.

Drag the bullet to the cylinder.
Spin the cylinder.
Pull the trigger.
Hope for the best!

Great graphics. These latter techniques are technically more complex than basic forms and are often classed as appropriate for advanced students, rather than beginners, to practice.
The unique format of this app, the combination of text, images and controllable video clips, was designed to provide the best possible medium for appreciating the performance of Aikido techniques. Note that the video clips are embedded in the app so that once it has been downloaded and installed no further Internet access is required.
For each technique there are two video clips for two different attacking directions, a description of the technique including key points, and a number of still images to supplement the text. You can swap between text and video with a single tap/click and you can also swap between the two video clips, which have been carefully synchronised.
To facilitate study of the techniques the video controls include a variable speed slider that allows you to slow down the clips, and a loop control to repeat them automatically.
The Aikido techniques demonstrated are:
Technique Attack/variation
1.	Ude Garami nage kosa dori
2.	Ude Garami nage 2 chudan tsuki
3.	Ude Garami nage 3 chudan tsuki
4.	Koshi nage 1 from Kotegaeshi
5. When demonstrated by expert practitioners the movements are fluid, graceful and apparently effortless. The video clips presented here have been carefully created to demonstrate these characteristics for a number of commonly practised Aikido techniques. The techniques are demonstrated slowly and clearly, and the unique coloured pencil style of the clips adds an attractive dimension to them.

For each of the 20 techniques there are two video clips showing two different attacking directions and a description of the technique including key points. You can examine the techniques in detail by either flicking the screen to move a clip a few frames backwards or forwards, or you can drag the clip progress bar to manually control the playback, again either backwards or forwards.

There are two screen modes: the first shows the video clip and associated text or the contents list; the second shows an enlarged view of the clip. You can switch between the two instantly.

The Aikido techniques demonstrated are:

Ikkyo (Ai hanmi katate dori)
Nikyo (Gyaku hanmi kata dori)
Sankyo (Chudan tsuki)
Yonkyo (Morote dori)
Gokyo (Yokomen uchi)
Irimi nage (Shomen uchi)
Shiho nage (Yokomen uchi)
Kote gaeshi (Chudan tsuki)
Sumi otoshi (Shomen uchi)
Tenchi nage (Ryote dori)
Kaiten nage (Jodan tsuki)
Koshi nage (Ai hanmi katate dori)
Katagatame (Gyaku hanmi katate dori)
Juji nage (Morote dori)
Ude garami nage (Katate dori)
Kokyunage (5 examples from various attacks)

Recent changes:
Improved interface.
Improved graphics.
Addition of 5 extra techniques.

4: Aikido Counter Techniques

AIKIDO VIDEO SKETCHES LIBRARY. 4: Aikido Counter Techniques.

According to the late Morihiro Saito sensei, Aikido counter technique training, or Kaeshi Waza, was shown by Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba only to his most prominent students, and then in strict secrecy. It was regarded as a preparation for Aikido instructors who would want to be seen as undefeatable and able to maintain leadership under difficult training situations.

Here you will find a collection of fifteen counter techniques based on commonly practised forms, each example comprising a text description illustrated with screenshots and two video clips each shot from a different angle.
The counter techniques are listed below:

Technique	Attack Counter techniques
--------- ------ ------------------
Ikkyo Ai hanmi katate dori	Ikkyo
Iriminage
Koshinage

Nikyo Gyaku hanmi katate dori	Nikyo
Sankyo
Shihonage

Kotegaeshi	Ai hanmi katate dori	Kotegaeshi
Iriminage
Koshinage

Shihonage	Yokomen uchi Shihonage
Iriminage
Kotegaeshi

Iriminage	Shomen uchi Iriminage
Sankyo
Nikyo

Recent changes:
Improved graphics and video

6: Aiki-jo Exercises

19 video clips of jo stretching and swinging exercises.

Valuable exercises for improving hip, back, shoulder and wrist flexibility, basic movement and confidence handling the jo.

Excellent preparatory exercises for jo classes.

The video clips can be played in slow motion, single-frame step forward and backward and looped to aid study.

The exercises are as follows:
1.
