진리와 이야기가 누가 더 인기 있나 내기를 하였다. 둘은 어느 유대인 마을로 갔다. 진리는 자신 있었다. 누구도 진리를 외면하지 못하리라 여겼기 때문이었다.

먼저 진리가 마을로 들어갔다. 사람들은 진리를 보더니 외면하였다. 그를 피했다. 열렸던 창문이 닫혔다. 마을 중앙에 도착할 즈음 주위를 둘러보니 길에는 아무도 없고 진리 혼자만 서 있게되었다. 진리는 혼자 쓸쓸히 마을을 통과했다.

이번엔 이야기가 마을로 들어갔다. 사람들이 기웃거리기 시작했다. 창문이 열리고, 사람들은 무슨 말인가 들어보려고 귀를 쫑긋 세웠다. 마을 중앙에 도착해 뒤를 돌아보니 많은 사람이 따라오고 있었다. 이야기가 마을을 통과하는 동안 수많은 사람들이 그에게 몰려들었다.

마을을 통과한 후 이야기는 진리를 만나게 되었다. 진리가 이야기에게 말했다.

"이야기야 네가 이겼다, 내가 졌다."

이야기가 말했다.

"진리야 그렇다면 네가 나를 옷으로 입으면 어떻겠니?"

진리는 흔쾌히 승락했고, 진리는 이야기를 옷으로 입었다.
그리고 다시 마을로 돌아 갔다.
그랬더니 수많은 사람들이 진리에게 몰려들게 되었다.
유대인 마을은 진리를 환영하기 시작하였다.

이렇게 이야기 옷을 입은 진리가 유대인의 살아있는 지식인 탈무드이다.
