这个游戏与以往的三国游戏相同的是统一全国，不同的是它的时间（应该说是年代）的表示方法是即时的，也就是说它不是回合制的，而时间是以月来计算的。游戏的重点是战争而非内政，玩家可亲临前线，在沙场上杀敌，也可运筹帷幄，享受军事家的乐趣。游戏按即时制展开，双方行动和交战是同时进行的，战斗景观相当刺激。游戏进行的大致流程是“内政经营模式”到“大地战略模式”，然后到“战争发生”，再循环到“内政经营模式”。许多玩家说，这个游戏最吸引人的莫过于武将升级系统及必杀技了。游戏采用了只在角色扮演类游戏中才出现的经验值，有了经验值也就有了升级。在游戏中，武将只要在出征队伍中就都会获得经验值，若出战（无论胜败），则会获得更高的经验值，若获胜，经验更加丰厚，但是若敌将逃走，获得的经验要少于敌将落马.
