App Assist - Custom Actions

Quickly access useful actions for the app you are using.

App Assist lets you customize the action performed when you launch your device's assist function, with different actions for each app.

Open a guide app while gaming, adjust brightness while watching videos, or check the date and time in full-screen mode. Choose actions that fit the way you use your device.


■ Before you start
How you launch App Assist depends on your device, Android version, and navigation settings.

On supported devices, you can launch actions by pressing and holding the Home button.
However, on some devices, this opens Google's Circle to Search or another feature instead of App Assist.

Check your device's assistant settings and available launch methods.
Device limitations may prevent App Assist from launching even when it is selected as the default assistant app.


■ Customize actions for each app
Choose different actions depending on the app you are using.
Assign frequently used apps and controls to create your own setup.


■ Register multiple actions
To assign multiple actions to the same app, add that app more than once with a different action for each entry.
When you launch App Assist, a selection screen lets you choose which action to perform.


■ Set a default action
Use a shared action for apps that do not have their own settings.
Select "Default action" as the target app and configure the action you want to use.

■ Setup
1. Open "Assistant app" or "Digital assistant app" in your device settings.
2. Select App Assist.
3. In App Assist, add a target app and choose an action.
4. Use an assistant launch method supported by your device.

Setting names and launch methods vary by device.


■ Launch with a physical button
On devices that allow you to assign an app to a physical button, you may also be able to launch App Assist with that button.
Select "App Assist (for launch)" in the supported button settings.

This option is unavailable on devices that do not support assigning apps to physical buttons.


■ Usage examples
・Switch between a game and a guide app
Set the action for each app to launch the other app.

・Check the date and time in full-screen mode
Set the target app's action to show the current date and time.

・Open settings for the app you are using
Assign the action to show app info.
To force stop the app, manually tap the force stop button on the device's app info screen.


■ Permissions
The following permissions are used to provide app features.

・Access the list of installed apps
Used to obtain information about the running app and provide launcher functionality.

・Find accounts on the device
Used when backing up data to Google Drive.
