Played for centuries across households in South India, Ashta Chamma (also known as Daadi or Chouka-Bara) is a classic strategy and luck game where 2 to 4 players race their tokens around a spiral board to bring them safely home. The name comes from two key rolls — Ashta (8) and Chamma (4) — the cowrie shell throws that unlock your pieces and earn you a bonus roll!
🐚 How to Play Each player starts with 4 tokens in their yard. Roll the 4 cowrie shells to move. Roll an 8 (all flat) or a 4 (all up) to unlock a new token and earn a bonus throw. Land on an opponent's token to send it to your capture zone — they'll need another 4 or 8 to free it! Navigate the outer track, spiral inward through the inner loop, and be the first player to bring all your tokens home to win!
