Three months later, all you have is "the machinery guy from the trade show". The card is still in the drawer. The person is gone.

Kardhaus is a business card scanner and organizer, but what it really keeps is the line that was never printed on the card: where you met, what they handle, what you promised to send. Back from a sales visit, a conference or a trade show, it turns that stack of cards into people you can still find.

■ Scan a card, the fields fill themselves
Point Google's document scanner at a card and it finds the edges, crops and straightens it. Name, company, department, job title, mobile, phone, email, website and address are read and put into the right fields; tap anything it got wrong and fix it. It reads English, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Japanese and Korean cards, and you can pick a card photo from your gallery instead.

■ The stack from the show, in one go
Scan several business cards at once. Each one is saved as soon as it is read, and then you go through them card by card. A dozen cards does not mean a dozen separate scans.

■ Write down what only you know
"She handles purchasing, quote due in September." No card says that, and three months later it is the only thing that helps. Every card has its own note, so write one line right after the meeting; it shows under the card in your list.

■ Forgot the name? Find them anyway
Search looks through names, companies, phone numbers and your own notes at the same time. Type the one word you do remember — the company, the city, the product — and the person comes back.

■ No account. Your cards stay on your phone
Open it and start; there is nothing to sign up for. Text recognition is Google ML Kit, running on the phone through Google Play services. Card pictures and the text read from them stay in the app's own storage: they are not uploaded to us, and they are not in Android's cloud backup either.
The scanner runs inside Google Play services, so Kardhaus never asks for the camera permission, and it does not ask for contacts, location or storage either.

■ What people ask before installing
Do I need an account?
No. Kardhaus has no accounts at all.

Do my cards go to the cloud?
No. Card pictures, the text read from them and your notes stay on this phone.

Can I move my cards to a new phone?
Not yet — backup is still being built. Uninstalling the app deletes the cards, so keep that in mind.

Which cards can it read?
English, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Japanese and Korean.

Why does the first scan take a moment?
The scanner and text recognition come from Google Play services and download the first time you use them. After that they run on the phone.

How is this different from my phone's contacts app?
Contacts keeps a phone number. Kardhaus keeps the person: the card itself, what you talked about, and the one note that lets you find them again three months later.
