Nonograms, also known as pic-a-pix, started appearing in Japanese puzzle magazines. Non Ishida published three picture grid puzzles in 1988 in Japan under the name of "Window Art Puzzles". Subsequently in 1990, James Dalgety in the UK invented the name Nonograms after Non Ishida, and The Sunday Telegraph started publishing them on a weekly basis.
In japanese nonograms the numbers are a form of discrete tomography that measures how many unbroken lines of filled-in squares there are in any given row or column. For example, a clue of "4 8 3" would mean there are sets of four, eight, and three filled squares, in that order, with at least one blank square between successive groups. To solve Japanese nonogram, one needs to determine which squares will be filled and which will be empty. These nonograms are often black and white, describing a binary image, but they can also be colored. If colored, the number clues are also colored to indicate the color of the squares. In such crossword two differently colored numbers may have a space in between them. For example, a black four followed by a red two could mean four black boxes, some empty spaces, and two red boxes, or it could simply mean four black boxes followed immediately by two red ones. Hanjie has no theoretical limit on size, and is not restricted to square layouts.
Griddlers were implemented by 1995 on hand held electronic toys in Japan. They were released with name Picross - Picture Crossword.

I have owned this app since my first smartphone back in... 2011 or 12? Although it was just the b&w version back then (also best in class, but I prefer the color). It ABSOLUTELY has proven to be worth the $5. It is hands down THE best nonogram game, both for easy to use UI, and variety. To this day they're still adding new puzzles. If you love nonograms, do yourself a favor and just buy this one. No other apps even compare.

I'VE BEEN PLAYING THIS GAME (BOTH PHONE & TABLET), SINCE IT 1st HIT THE PLAY STORE & I MUST SAY THAT ITS NEVER DISAPPOINTED... YOU DON'T LOSE LIVES, FOR MAKING A MISTAKE; I WILL GLADLY WATCH A 30-SECOND AD, TO UNLOCK THE NEXT PUZZLE; EACH PUZZLE IS PURE ENJOYMENT TO WORK ON; NO 2 PUZZLES ARE EXACTLY THE SAME; I EXTREMELY ENJOY THE MORE CHALLENGING PUZZLES (LARGER ONES); THESE PUZZLES ALWAYS HELP ME TO RELIEVE ANY STRESS & ANXIETY THAT I MIGHT HAVE. SOMETIMES, I WORK ON THESE PUZZLES FOR HOURS.

I enjoy this game, and I was 12 puzzles away from finishing the entire app when you had to go and restructure it. How frustrating!!

Okay so this game is not actually free and that annoys me. I know they have to make money, but letting you play 24 puzzles, and THEN you see that every. Single. Puzzle. Is locked behind an ad. There are over 3000 puzzle, but they're all locked, and I just wish that I had known how this would work ahead of time.
★☆☆☆☆Angela Roengsamut· Aug 9, 2025
It lets you play for a couple levels before it literally forces you to watch an ad every. Single. Level. There's literal THOUSANDS of levels you need to watch an ad for first. I'm not watching that many ads, and not going to pay either. Screw that.

Stupid waste of time. You get like 20ish puzzles then you have to pay to get more or watch an ad for EVERY SINGLE ONE to unlock and play it.
