COLREG Made Easy: Rules & Quiz

COLREG Made Easy is the complete interactive reference to the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea — built for deck officers, cadets and watchkeepers who need the Rules of the Road at hand, on watch or ashore.

Read the full COLREG text for free. Unlock the complete toolkit once and own it — no subscription, no ads, works fully offline.

FIVE WAYS TO REACH THE SAME RULE

SITUATIONS — Describe what you see in plain words: "red over white over red", "a vessel approaching from starboard". The app names the vessel, tells you whether you are stand-on or give-way, and points to the rule. Twenty-one common encounters are pre-solved: crossing, head-on, overtaking, narrow channel, TSS, restricted visibility, sailing, fishing and not-under-command.

LIGHTS & SHAPES — 41 configurations covering Rules 23 to 31 and Annex II, drawn as realistic night scenes. Rotate each vessel to bow, stern, port or starboard, switch between lights and day shapes, and read every light shown with its arc of visibility. Filter by vessel type and by activity.

RULES — The complete regulation and annexes, with fast full-text search, a glossary of defined terms, and saved rules for the ones you keep returning to.

AUDIO — The whole COLREG read aloud, rule by rule, with your position remembered. Listen hands-free on watch, in the gym, or on passage to the exam.

QUIZ & EXAM — Practise by category or sit a scored 20-question exam with an end-screen review. Per-category accuracy and your best score are tracked, so you always know what is still weak.

BUILT FOR THE BRIDGE

NIGHT MODE — A dark theme designed for a darkened bridge. Use it on watch without losing your night vision.

FULLY OFFLINE — Rules, diagrams, questions and audio all live on the device. Nothing is fetched at sea. It behaves the same mid-ocean as it does alongside.

NO SUBSCRIPTION — One unlock, yours permanently. No ads, no account, no tracking.

ALWAYS FREE — The full rule text, distress signals and identification by lights and shapes are free and stay free. Safety-critical content is never behind a paywall.

WRITTEN BY A MASTER MARINER

Every explanation, diagram and question is original work, written and checked by a serving Master Mariner and verified against the regulation before it ships.

WHO IT IS FOR

Deck officers and cadets preparing for OOW, Chief Mate and Master oral examinations, and candidates for MCA, USCG and STCW assessments. Also suitable for yachtmasters, pilots, VTS operators and anyone who keeps a navigational watch.

Whether you are standing your first bridge watch or revising for an oral exam, COLREG Made Easy helps you learn the Rules properly and recall them when it counts.

Advisory only. The official IMO COLREG text prevails. Rules 2, 5, 7 and 8 — good seamanship, look-out, risk assessment and action to avoid collision — apply at all times.
