L’hyène par exemple est gloutonne, malhonnête, brutale et elle échoue toujours dans ses actions malhonnêtes. Son rival, le lièvre est plutôt rusé, il l’emporte à tous les coups face à l’hyène. Aussi d’autres animaux comme l’engoulevent ou encore la pintade font preuve de bon sens. Dans les contes en miroir, les deux personnages sont en réalité les deux aspects opposés de la personne humaine : le bien et le mal. Les personnages qui apparaissent le plus souvent sont le lièvre, le roi / lion, la femme, l’hyène, l’orphelin, le génie...
