Think about it, you're PAYING to BID in an auction you MIGHT win. That means if you don't win you don't get that money back. They've found a way to get several people to pay for the same item and get nothing in return. On Ebay you bid commitments of specific $ amounts on an item and if yours is the highest when the auction ends, you pay that to get the item for that price. That's like if you bid $80 for an item on eBay & didn't win but then still paid Ebay $80 for letting you participate.
