Ebira-English Dictionary

This work is a culmination of over 25 years processes by Yusuf Ozi Usman, an ace journalist, author, and teacher. It started as a pastime thing in 1986, and eventually snowballed into the production of the first-ever published Ebira-English Dictionary in the history of the Ebira nation. It must be acknowledged, however, that one Malam Adabara attempted in the '70s to produce Ebira Dictionary but it did not go beyond the manuscript.

The first edition of this standard version was completed, published, and publicly presented in Kano in 1998. It was embraced by Ebira scholars, traditional institutions, and those who came across it.
This is the official digital version of the STANDARD EBIRA-ENGLISH DICTIONARY. Its hardcopy was officially presented on 11th December 2021 in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

* Tone marks ( ́ ̀ ̂ ̂ ̌ ̃) are indicated on the head words and sentence examples for none Ebira speakers, and the Ebira speakers to be able to differentiate words that look similar.
* There are also over 600 names that are native/indigenous to Ebira, to spice up the Dictionary.
* Six consulting editors (David Jowith, an Associate Professor of English and European Languages at the Bayero University, Kano; Late Mamman Okikiri, a renowned scholar and teacher in Ebira Language for over 40 years; Late Ustaz Yoonus Abdullahi, (Former Grand Khadi of Kogi State) and author of some publications in Ebira Language; Sadiq Yahaya, a renowned educationist, and literary critic; Lawan J. Ozovehe, Chairman/Coordinator, Centre for Ebira Studies, Federal College of Education, Okene, Kogi State; and Emman Otu-Adeku Omadivi, Public Relations Consultant and advocate of proper documentation of history of Ebira as a tribe and as a group.
