Ekapeli Alku on ensisijaisesti suunniteltu esikouluikäisille tai vanhemmille oppilaille, jotka tarvitsevat harjoitusta kirjain-äänne -yhteyksien tunnistamisessa. Ekapelin taustalla on Jyväskylän yliopiston Lapsen kielen kehitys -pitkittäistutkimuksessa tehdyt havainnot ja tutkimustulokset.
Ekapeli on kehitetty auttamaan erityisesti niitä lapsia, joille lukemaan oppiminen on haastavaa ja jotka tarvitsevat lisäharjoitusta. Ekapelit sopivat kuitenkin myös vanhemmille pelaajille, joilla on pulmia lukutaidossa. Ekapeli voidaan ottaa käyttöön esimerkiksi kotona, koulussa, esikoulussa tai puheterapeutilla.
Pelin avulla harjoittelemisesta voi olla erityisesti apua, jos lapsen suvussa on esiintynyt lukivaikeuksia tai lapsen kielen kehityksessä on ollut havaittavissa vaikeuksia.
