GPS Speedometer HUD

A speedometer that reads your speed from the satellites your phone already listens to, for when the vehicle has no instrument you trust — a hire car, a motorcycle, a bike, a boat, or a dashboard you suspect reads a little high.

No ad while you are moving. Not a full-screen ad, not a banner, at any frequency. While a trip is running, while the vehicle is moving, or while HUD mode is on, the app does not so much as request one. Ads live in the stopped part of the session: opening the app before you set off, and the trip summary once you have parked — at most twice in a day, never twice inside ten minutes, and none at all on the day you install it.

Reads zero when you are parked. Below about 5 km/h a phone cannot tell walking pace from standing still, so the display sits at exactly zero instead of drifting between numbers. When a fix is too rough to trust, no speed is shown at all rather than a made-up one.

HUD mode for the windscreen. The whole display flips left to right, so laid face-up on the dashboard it reads the right way round in the reflection. The screen stays awake while it is on, on a black background, and no ad appears for as long as it is on.

A trip, when you want one. Start a trip and the app totals your distance, your time, your top speed and your average — the average counting the standstills, as a journey average does.

Your location stays on the phone. Location is read only while the app is open and on screen. There is no background location permission in this app and no background service — both are blocked in the manifest, not merely unused. Your position is never stored and never sent anywhere; the app has no account, no sign-up and no server, and works with no signal.

Please set the phone up before you set off, and do not operate it while driving.

Not a certified speedometer. A phone reads speed from satellites, so it lags a sudden change by about a second and needs a view of the sky — in a tunnel, a covered car park or a dense city street it may show nothing. The vehicle's own instrument is the one that counts in law.
