Hearmony: Ear Training

Hearmony is an ear trainer and note reading app for music students, singers and players. A note plays, its step on the ladder lights up, and you name what you heard. Intervals, chords, scales and notes on the staff are practiced by ear and by eye, a few minutes a day, from your first interval to perfect pitch practice.

Ear training that starts at your level: a one-minute ear check picks your first lesson, nothing is timed unless you choose the exam mode, and the tempo can be slowed down. Then Hearmony works on your own mix-ups. Get one wrong and it plays your answer and the right one back to back, as two climbers on the ladder with the gap between them marked. A Contrast Duel follows: six quick questions on exactly that pair, a major third against a perfect fourth, for example. Pairs you keep confusing come back on a schedule until you can tell them apart.

The Pitch Ladder sits at the center of every question. Each step is a scale degree with its own color, and the notes you hear light their steps in time with the sound, so relative pitch becomes something you can see. You answer by tapping a step or by playing the on-screen keyboard. In sight reading practice you see a note on the staff, hear it and name it on its step, all in one question.

Note names follow the way you were taught: letters (C D E), German letters with H and B, fixed do solfege in French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, Japanese do-re-mi or iroha, Korean do-re-mi or letters, and movable do with a la-based or do-based minor. Switch systems at any time and the ladder, the answer keys and the feedback switch with you. Intervals and chords are spelled the way music theory books spell them.

Free, with no time limit: the daily warm-up, the first three interval levels (seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths, the major sixth and the octave, ascending, descending and together), major and minor triads, treble and bass clef note reading with one ledger line, the Contrast Duel, every naming system, the piano sound and the last seven days of stats.

Hearmony Pro adds a perfect pitch program in which the A reference slowly drops away, seventh chords and inversions, cadences and chord progressions for music theory you can hear, melodic dictation, scales and modes, alto and tenor clefs with key signatures, a timed exam mode, custom drills, guitar, strings, flute and a sung "a" for every drill, your full history with a confusion map, and an editor for song anchors taken from public-domain tunes.

Piano, guitar, strings and flute are recordings of real instruments. The pitch of every sample was measured and is corrected as it plays, so the interval you hear is the interval named on the screen. Hearmony works offline, keeps your progress on your phone and can export it as a backup file. There are no ads and no account.

Hearmony Pro is available as a yearly subscription, which new subscribers can start with a 7-day free trial, as a monthly subscription, or as a one-time lifetime purchase.
