You can call it standing grappling. You can call it a variation on clinch range. Infighting is close contact, chest-against-chest, halitosis range. You are close enough to throw, sweep, strike, strangle, gouge, bite...and not too close to kick, if you know how. Infighting has the most possibilities, and thus the most variables, of any fighting range. And it is quick. Distance is time and if you're fighting at zero distance you have no time to waste. Offense and defense cannot be separated. You must be able to act on your opponent without needing to know what the opponent is doing, because by the time you know, it is too late. ‘Many traditional arts work better once you play with them as infighting systems. Rory Miller is a writer and teacher living peacefully in the Pacific Northwest, USA. He has served for seventeen years in corrections as an officer and sergeant working maximum security, booking and mental health; leading a tactical team; and teaching subjects ranging from Defensive Tactics and Use of Force to First Aid and Crisis Communications with the Mentally Ill. For fourteen months he was an advisor to the Iraqi Corrections System. He received a BS degree in Psychology; served in the National Guard as a Combat Medic (91A/B); earned college varsities in judo and fencing, and received a mokuroku in jujutsu. Mr. Miller is the author of several award-winning books and DVDs, including “Meditations on Violence”, “Facing Violence”, “Scaling Force”, and “Conflict Communications”. As an experienced martial artist and veteran correction officer, Rory Miller distills what he learned from jailhouse brawls, tactical operations, and ambushes to explore the differences between martial arts and the subject martial arts were designed to deal with: Violence. Principles are well stated. Explanations are clear. Practical. Provides more than you pay for on in-fighting learning. But to really absorb what the app is giving, the exercises should be 'felt' in partner-training. A video lesson has just enough length not to use up all of one's concentration; leaving enough afterward to reflect, summarize, exercise...rest before moving to the next. To further help learning., provide the app with an option for slow playback. Overall, the app is very good.
