Description
Git Journal is a note taking / journaling app built with privacy and data portability in mind. It stores all its notes in a standardised Markdown + YAML header format or plaintext. The notes are stored in a hosted Git Repo of your choice - GitHub / GitLab / Gitea / Gogs / Any Custom-provider.
Features -
- Offline First - All yours notes are available offline - No Account Required - Categorize your Notes with Folders - Open source / Free Software / FOSS - Can easily be extended and integrated with other Git tools - Can also be used to manage Hugo / Jekyll / Gatsby websites - No Ads - Built with Flutter
Never need to import / export your notes, as you always have control of the data. Apps may come and go, but your notes will always be with you.
The app comes with a clean, easy to use interface designed to focus on just writing your journal entries without any distractions.
We have chosen Git as a backend as self-hosting a Git server is much simpler than almost any other software, additionally there are already many commercial providers of Git. So you can choose who you want to trust with your notes. We currently don't support encrypting the notes, but it's something we're actively working on.
Recent changes: * Add support for YYYY-MM-DD in the YAML frontmatter * Add a button to export the repo as a zip * Small bug fixes

I've tried other markdown note apps, but this is the first I've found that works perfectly with my existing repo of notes. It seems to pick up dates and times from the names of the files, supports tags, supports title metadata, and surprisingly it also supports wiki type links between the files! It has a pretty clean look which I also appreciate. My one complaint is it seems you can't set a custom port if you're selecting a self-hosted git, it expects the default port of 22.

Absolutely awesome to be able to sync my notes to GitHub.

Great integration with Obsidian! Just open the git journal repo folder as Obsidian Vault.

This app works well and has so much potential, but it is really neglected by the developer (no updates for ages now). Performance drops sharply once you have markdown files with a lot of text (it stutters while opening the file, while scrolling and while typing, thus rendering the app unusable) ☹️ Also you can't use "Find in note" when previewing the markdown which makes it hard to find content in large files.

It's a really nice idea, but I'm finding the implementation to be quite buggy to the point of being almost unusable. The git implementation should theoretically be simple, but files constantly disappear, duplicate, revert, etc. still kinda useful

Worked flawlessly for a few weeks. Then git merge failed. Tried to send a bug report, no response. Tried to clear the repo and start over, nothing happened. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling, app is now just a black screen. And I was just about to pay for pro...

ATROCIOUS! Why would you make it store everything in the ROOT folder?! HELLO?! 90% of people who use this have NOT changed to a custom ROM, so EVERY SINGLE PERSON—even the PRO users have no permission to access their ROOT folders. I don't care how much you try, it's hardwired to deny root permission and no app on The Play Store will allow otherwise. Yet you leave users no way to change folder locations because you started in a denied location.
