Description
Kandilo is a calm Orthodox calendar and prayer companion for daily Christian life. See today's fast, what it allows and why the Church keeps it, together with the feast of the day, the saints commemorated and your own daily prayer rule. Everything follows the Orthodox tradition you choose, in your language.
Kandilo keeps the lamp burning. It brings the church calendar, prayer book and daily commemorations into one quiet, respectful place.
WHAT KANDILO DOES - Shows today's fast, what may be eaten and the reason for the fast - Presents the feast and saints of the day, with their lives to read - Opens a full fasting and feast calendar for any month up to 24 months before or after today - Provides a prayer book, a prayer rule you can check off and a komboskini prayer rope counter - Offers two home screen widgets for a quick look at the day - Gives optional reminders for morning and evening prayer, set to your own rhythm
YOUR TRADITION, NOT A GENERIC ONE Kandilo follows the calendar you actually keep. Choose from 15 Orthodox traditions across the New Calendar (Revised Julian) and Old Calendar (Julian): Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, Mount Athos, the Russian Church and ROCOR, Serbian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Georgian, Polish, Finnish, the OCA and the Ukrainian churches. Fasting rules, feasts and saints' commemorations follow the tradition you pick.
FOLLOW THE FASTING YEAR The calendar places the four fasting seasons in the rhythm of the Church year: Great Lent, the Apostles' Fast, the Dormition Fast and the Nativity Fast. It also marks Holy Week, the date of Pascha, the great feasts and the weekly Wednesday and Friday fasts according to the selected tradition.
Open any day to see whether it is a fast day, the foods allowed and the reason for that observance. The monthly Orthodox calendar remains available offline because dates and fasting rules are computed on your device.
PRAYER FOR EACH DAY The prayer book keeps core Orthodox prayers close at hand. Use a prayer rule that can be checked off, read morning prayers and evening prayers, and keep count with the komboskini prayer rope counter. Gentle reminders can support the times you choose without setting the pace for you.
SAINTS AND FEASTS Each day shows the feast and the saints commemorated. Their lives are available to read, with full lives in Serbian, Russian and Romanian and English text as the fallback in other languages. The saints of the day sit beside the fasting guidance and prayers, so the day's observance can be understood as a whole.
IN YOUR LANGUAGE The app, prayers and saints' names are available in ten languages: English, Serbian in Cyrillic and Latin, Russian, Romanian, Greek, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Polish, Finnish and Georgian.
COMMON QUESTIONS
What does a fast day allow? Open Today or a date in the calendar to see the day's fasting rule and permitted foods for your selected Orthodox tradition. Kandilo also explains the reason for the observance.
How is the date of Pascha shown? Pascha and the days connected to it appear within the church calendar according to the chosen tradition. Holy Week and the movable fasting periods are placed around that date.
Can I use Kandilo without a connection? Yes. Kandilo works entirely on your device without an account. The calendar, fasting guidance and prayer tools work offline.
MADE WITH CARE Prayer texts and the lives of the saints are drawn from public domain and freely licensed Orthodox sources, credited inside the app under Sources and Acknowledgements.
A note: fasting is guidance in the spirit of the Church, not a rule imposed on you. For anything personal, ask your priest.
