Comments on Kanji Stories for Android

Wow?! Please don't put a subscription! This is legitimately one of the best apps I've ever seen to help Japanese learning! If you want some actual complaints, it feels like the text is too bundled together on my phone next to the Kanji description, which is very eye soring. The way I would think you could fix that is to have the image appear above the text, and the text be below it (instead of to the right), where the words can extend partially more to the right than where the image is located.

★★★★★ Curious Penguin · Aug 6, 2026

Had been learning for a week. I think I might finally learn something :) I like that this app doesn't correct my ugly strokes, and shows me instead the real one, side-by-side, so I can compare. Will edit when I reached significant level.

★★★★★ Trevor Kurzhal · Jul 30, 2026

I'm unsure why this app is not more highly-rated. Utilizing this has been a phenomenal experience for Kanji learning and retention. Just a month and a half in (at a very undisciplined pace), and I have encountered about half of N5's Kanji, and I've retained a surprising amount. Since that time, I've added daily reviews (20-40 for N5) and the introduction of just 5 new Kanji per day, and it's sticking very well. I went ahead and purchased a lifetime subscription for this. The stats: great to see!

It's a nice idea, but there's no pronunciation guides, so you won't know how to even SAY the kanji; who cares about just what they mean? People gotta learn how to SAY 'em, too, or it's useless.

★★☆☆☆ Madaline VanParis · Aug 12, 2026

It was really good for a decent while before the update forced you to pay to study anything past N5. However, it wasn't very good for memorization, not as good as other apps I've tried, and pronunciations are usually very small and extremely kissable. It helped me learn, but not a ton.
