Description
Kubios HRV app uses scientifically validated heart rate variability (HRV) algorithms (used by scientists all over the world) to provide reliable information about your wellbeing and daily readiness. To make HRV measurements with the app, you need a Bluetooth heart rate (HR) sensor, such as Polar H10. Kubios HRV app has two modes of operation:

1) Readiness Measurement Mode monitors changes in your daily readiness status. By doing short (1-5 min), controlled resting HRV measurements regularly, you will receive reliable information about your physiological recovery and/or stress, how it changes from day to day, and how your HRV values compare with normal population values. Readiness monitoring is used by professional athletes in training optimization but can also be used by sports enthusiasts or anyone interested in their wellbeing, as it provides objective information about overall bodily stress as well as cardiovascular health.

2) Custom Measurement Mode, designed for researchers, health and wellbeing professionals, and sport scientists, conducts various types of HRV recordings. This measurement mode supports test-subject management, short- and longer-term measurements, live data acquisition, as well as event markers. Since the app is built with Polar mobile SDK, it can read live data from Polar sensors, including electrocardiogram (ECG) and heart beat interval (RR) data from Polar H10 sensors and live photoplethysmogram (PPG) and inter-pulse interval (PPI) data from optical Polar OH1 and Verity Sense sensors. Thus, when used together with these Polar sensors, the custom measurement mode will provide an easy-to-use, light-weight, affordable way to obtain ECG, PPG and RR/PPI recordings. Regarding RR recording, the app also supports other Bluetooth HR sensors available on the market. Kubios HRV software license, which supports this measurement mode is required to store measurement data.

HRV is a reliable measure of autonomic nervous system (ANS). It tracks the beat-to-beat changes in RR interval arising from the continuous regulation of heart rate by the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the ANS. Kubios HRV analysis algorithms have achieved gold-standard status in scientific research, and our software products are used at roughly 1200 universities in 128 countries. The main HRV parameters include the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) and sympathetic nervous system (SNS) indexes, the computations of which have been optimized, using a large reservoir of scientific research results, to provide accurate interpretation of recovery and stress.

Comments on Kubios HRV for Android

Kubios is free. It gives you the raw numbers and not some invented, proprietary bs that you can never ever interpret on your own. Kubios gives you straightforward numbers that you can work with. It is a tad slow to load both the phone app and the desktop app. Unfortunately, I can’t download individual measurements from the phone app as a data file to work with using the Kubios HRV desktop app. The baseline should be user-definable. I’d prefer a baseline of the last 60 days, whereas others might prefer longer or shorter baselines. Every now and then, the phone app exits out of the blue, usually when it should be saving the readings, and you have to do a new reading. The desktop app also gives you heart rate zones based on your maximal heart rate, possibly also considering your resting heart rate. They could be a bit more transparent and actually inform users how exactly they get to those zones. I had to calculate the zones myself, which came out as follows: Zone 0 (Inactive) = < 45%; Zone 1 (Very Easy) = 46-60%; Zone 2 (Easy) = 61-70%; Zone 3 (Moderate) = 71-80%, Zone 4 (Hard) = 81-85%; Zone 5 (Maximal) = 86+%. The phone app gives you your daily readiness in four categories: Very Low, Low, Normal, and High. I have come up with my own training rule, which is as follows: If my readiness is very low, I do a Zone 1 workout. If it’s low, I do a Zone 2 workout. If it’s normal, I do a Zone 3 workout, and if it’s high, I drop the fu….. Hammer. The app is great. It wouldn’t really make sense for Kubios to make it a paid app because you can always download the free Kubios desktop app and analyze your readiness there; you would just need a watch that saves R-R intervals, which most of the modern sports watches do. I believe that the Kubios HRV app will remain free for the foreseeable future as the Kubios desktop app has always been free and can do the very same thing and a heap load of more stuff than the app.

I have used Kubios almost daily for over 5 years. I have used it to track various lifestyle changes with diet, exercise, sleep, breathing exercises, and meditation. My HRV has improved considerably-at 60 years old, mine HRV was age appropriate (not so good). At 68, it is dramatically improved to the level of a 20-year-old (similar measurements with Elite HRV. I measure my HRV daily. I have tried the beta test that uses a cell phone accelerometer, and I got the same readings as with me polar H₉.

Bogus. Many people have ectopic beat, and this app is not able to handle them properly, randomly delivering very low or high RMSD. While they do not say what they really do, it seems like the app is incapable of recognizing and discarding ectopic beats and uses some primitive quality metrics instead. In that situation the app seems to face an impossible choice of either discarding all HRV and producing very low RMSD, or keep also HRV stemming from ectopic beats and produce very high RMSD

€685 for one year to save a custom reading. That is insane and the app quality is not even good, it kept saying connected to the device and measuring a heart rate while it was disconnected for minutes.

Does6 not connect to the Polar H10 which is working fine when tried with other apps (Polar Beat, Elite HRV etc.)
★★☆☆☆ Rune Magnussen · Aug 6, 2023
Gives the same HRV score every day. The HR and other values varies but the score remains the same. You don't need the app I can tell you your score, it's 63%. Every day. Forever. Other apps may have inconsistency problems but at least they give you different results on different days. The two stars are for all the info you get to ponder about, like PNS and SNS and all the rest that probably means something to a doctor but not me. I used the Polar h10.

Why can't we simply track continuously and analyze the long term data? And why can't we store data locally...
★☆☆☆☆ Michael Crespo · Mar 9, 2024
Latest Kubios app release from Nov. 2023 doesn't run on my Android 10 phone now. It won't recognize my Polar H₉ HRM. Up until then it was working OK. I installed the app on my iPad, and it works OK there.
