Cloud-to-ground bolts are a common phenomenon—about 100 strike Earth’s surface every single second—yet their power is extraordinary. Each bolt can contain up to one billion volts of electricity. With temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun and shockwaves beaming out in all directions, this phenomenon is a lesson in physical science and humility. It is caused by an electric potential difference (a voltage) being created between one cloud and another, or between a cloud and the ground.
Some types, including the most common types, never leave the clouds but travel between differently charged areas within or between clouds. Other rare forms can be sparked by extreme forest fires, volcanic eruptions, and snowstorms. "Ball lightning", a small, charged sphere that floats, glows, and bounces along oblivious to the laws of gravity or physics, still puzzles scientists.
Thunder and lightning occur at roughly the same time, although you see the flash before you hear the thunder. This is because light travels much faster than sound. When you see the flash, you can start counting seconds and then divide to see how far away the bolt struck. If it takes 10 seconds for the thunder to roll in, it will struck about 2 miles or 3 kilometers away.
In ancient mythologies from many cultures the bolt would be hurled by male sky gods to punish, water, or fertilize the earth or its creatures.
