I've played for a couple of years, and from personal experience, you can not beat the story without SSRs, especially in the later stories the battles are too hard. I've been stuck at a battle for months because it takes that long to upgrade your units as well as acquire the stamina to do it. This is a game for people with money. It wouldn't be so bad if you could just use diamonds to lower the difficulty. TBH, no matter how much I upgrade, I ain't winning that battle any time soon. Sigh.
