Maatje: Dutch for Expats

Living in the Netherlands and learning Dutch? The Dutch you need is already around you: the letter from the gemeente, the sign at the station, the form you cannot read, the message from your child's school. Maatje turns that into your course.

Most apps teach you a language somebody else chose. Maatje teaches you the one you actually meet. Photograph any Dutch text, Maatje reads it, picks out the words worth learning, and explains them in your own language. Those words become what you study, and what you practise saying.

CAPTURE WHAT YOU ACTUALLY MEET
Point your camera at any Dutch text, or share text and screenshots into Maatje from any other app. Every word keeps the photo it came from, so you remember where you met it.

LEARN IT PROPERLY
Every word enters a spaced-repetition schedule that brings it back exactly when you are about to forget it. This part is free, and stays free.

THEN SAY IT OUT LOUD
Reading Dutch is one thing; speaking it at the counter, at the doctor, at work is another. Maatje's coach is a real spoken conversation, built from the words you captured, with corrections as you go and a written recap in your own language afterwards.

CLASSES FOR REAL SITUATIONS
Pick a class instead of a blank conversation:
- Everyday life: the doctor, paperwork and officials, shops, work, your child's school, neighbours
- Listening practice: a real fragment, then questions on it
- Exam preparation: if you are working towards the inburgering or NT2 speaking exams (A2 or B1) and the KNM topics, there are classes built round exactly those situations

STARTING FROM ZERO IS FINE
If you have just arrived and know almost no Dutch, the coach teaches word by word and explains in your own language, then quietly drops the support as you start coping. A lesson you cannot understand teaches nothing.

IN YOUR OWN LANGUAGE
Explanations, translations and lesson recaps come back in your language, not in a third one. For Persian speakers the whole interface is in Farsi, right-to-left, with a proper Persian typeface.

Start with a free 5-minute level check. No purchase, no card. It tells you roughly which CEFR level you are at.

ABOUT THE PAID LESSONS
The live coach is a subscription: 15 minutes of spoken conversation a day, which is one full lesson. The time refills every morning rather than expiring as unused credits, and a lesson that dies in the first seconds costs you nothing.

Capturing, learning and reviewing words are free forever, and reviewing works offline.
