MAMA 31

I don't understand what's happening to Mom.

Everything used to be normal. Well… almost. An old, cozy apartment, an ordinary building, a typical courtyard outside the window. But now I try not to even leave my room whenever I hear her footsteps in the hallway… and that terrifying voice.

Something is wrong with Mom.

She wanders around the apartment as if she's looking for me. Sometimes she stops behind the door and just stands there. Sometimes it feels like she's everywhere...
What should I do: run or hide?
I need to get out of here—or figure out what's really going on.

And Mom isn't the only problem.

My older brother is acting even stranger. If he catches me, he immediately calls Mom and tells on me. My sister, on the other hand, sometimes helps. She says strange things and hints that there might be a way out.
Who can I even trust in this house?

And then there's my friend…

I have no idea how he keeps getting here. Sometimes I see him in the stairwell. Sometimes in the courtyard. Sometimes in dark places where no sane person would ever go at night.
It's as if he's trying to show me something.
Maybe I should follow him.
Or maybe that's a really bad idea.
Maybe someone can tell me what I'm supposed to do?

Outside, it's winter.

At night, our neighborhood looks completely different. Old apartment blocks, garages, dark windows, an empty kiosk, stairwells, basements, and attics…
It feels like the answers are hidden somewhere around here.
I remember there's a crazy old woman living in the building next door. But compared to everyone else, maybe she isn't so crazy after all?
