Description
Mancala, is a generic name for a family of 2-player turn-based strategy board games played with small stones, beans, or seeds and rows of holes or pits in the earth, a board or other playing surface. The objective is usually to capture all or some set of the opponent's stones, beans, etc. Versions of the game have been played for at least hundreds of years around the world.
The name is a classification or type of game, rather than any specific game. Some of the most popular mancala games (with regard to distribution area, the numbers of players and tournaments, and publications) are:
Ali Guli Mane or Pallanguzhi – played in Southern India. It is also called as omanu guntalu in telugu. This game is also played in rural areas of telangana, India. Bao la Kiswahili – played in most of East Africa including Kenya, Tanzania, Comoros, Malawi, as well as some areas of DR Congo and Burundi. Congkak – South Asia from the Maldives to the Philippines, also known as Dakon, Ohvalhu, Sungka etc. Kalah – North American variation, the most popular variant in the Western world. Oware (awalé, awélé) – Ashanti, but played world-wide with close variants played throughout western Africa and in the Caribbean. Toguz korgool or Toguz kumalak – played in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Although more than 800 names of traditional mancala games are known, some names denote the same game, while some names are used for more than one game. Almost 200 modern invented versions have also been described. There are many variants including Oware,Awale, Ayo, Warri, Ouri, Ncho, Awele,Kalah game.
HOW TO PLAY THE MANCALA GAME??? Each player starts their turn by selecting a hole on their side. The player drops a marble, one-by-one, into each succeeding hole counter-clockwise around the board until the marbles run out. In Mancala, this is called "sowing."
CAPTURE: If you end on an empty pit in your row, the marbles in the opposite pit are captured. FREE TURNS: Place your LAST MARBLE in your store and get an extra turn!
AND THE WINNER IS!!!
When a player runs out of marbles, the game ends. The opponent gets to add all marbles on their side of the board to their store. This is where real strategy comes into play.
The player with the most marbles in their store wins!
