So for those wondering how this app works, it's exploiting the magnetometer sensor in your phone. Magnetometers detect MAGNETIC FIELDS, not metal exactly. The phone mag can easily locate iron, it can likewise detect magnetism in bricks, igneous rocks and various minerals. This particular app is so, one can do better with more serious scientific apps that provide a high degree of accuracy for this kind of thing. With the right app you can detect iron pipes in the ground a foot down or deeper.
