ABOUT ALPHONSE MUCHA
──────────────────────────────
Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was a Moravian painter who became, almost by accident, the defining designer of Art Nouveau. He was a jobbing illustrator in Paris when a printer needed a poster for Sarah Bernhardt over the 1894 Christmas holidays and nobody else was available. Gismonda went up on the boulevards on 1 January 1895 and was being stolen off the hoardings within days. The manner he invented there - a tall narrow panel, a calm figure ringed by a halo of ornament, hair drawn in long whiplash curves, colour laid down in flat pastel fields - was called le style Mucha before it was called anything else.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION
──────────────────────────────
The artworks are sourced from open-access programs, including the Cleveland Museum of Art and Wikimedia Commons, that release faithful reproductions of public-domain art for anyone to use.
Many of these prints are period advertising from the 1890s and carry the brand names of their original clients, lettered into the artwork by Mucha himself. They are shown here as the historical posters they are.
