Description
The Peony Pavilion is the masterpiece of Tang Xianzu, the Ming dynasty dramatist. Together with The Purple Hairpin, The Dream of Handan, and The Dream of Nanke, it forms the collection known as the “Four Dreams of Linchuan,” and is counted among the four great classical dramas of China. Comprising fifty-five scenes, it tells the story of Du Liniang, the daughter of a prefect in Southern Song dynasty Nanyang, and the scholar Liu Mengmei, who fall in love beyond the boundary of life and death, ultimately reuniting. With its central theme that “emotion can transcend life and death,” the play represents the pinnacle of Ming dynasty chuanqi dramatic art.
Tang Xianzu advanced the concept of “supreme emotion,” holding that “emotion arises from no known cause, yet deepens with each passing moment; the living may die for it, and the dead may return to life.” In opposing the suppression of emotion by “principle,” his work displays a distinct humanistic color. Famous scenes such as “Wandering in the Garden, Startled from a Dream,” “Seeking the Dream,” “Portraying the Truth,” “Judgment in the Underworld,” and “Returning to Life” are celebrated for their ornate diction and profound, ethereal artistic conception. Blending poetry, song lyrics, and stage performance, the play has been hailed as a dramatic masterpiece comparable to those of “the Oriental Shakespeare.”
The Peony Pavilion has exerted a tremendous influence on the history of Chinese opera. Many later Kunqu opera excerpts, such as “Wandering in the Garden,” “Startled from a Dream,” and “Calling the Portrait,” are taken from this play and remain frequently performed. Dramatists of the Qing dynasty, including Li Yu and Kong Shangren, were all influenced by it. The character Du Liniang has become one of the most representative female figures in Chinese literature, symbolizing the pursuit of free love and spiritual liberation.
As a paradigm of Ming dynasty chuanqi, The Peony Pavilion perfectly integrates poetic language with dramatic structure. Reading this play allows one to experience how classical Chinese opera uses “supreme emotion” to resist the constraints of ritual propriety, and to appreciate the unique expression of romance, poetry, and the consciousness of life within Chinese aesthetics.
