Description
NanoPond is an artificial life simulator that turns your Android device into a tiny digital ecosystem.
Inspired by cellular automata such as Conway?s Game of Life, NanoPond goes further by giving cells executable genomes that can reproduce, mutate, and evolve.
Each cell is a tiny virtual machine that executes its own genome using a compact set of 16 instructions. These instructions let cells read and copy genetic code, interact with neighbors, share energy, and compete for survival. Because every possible genome can be executed safely, programs can mutate and evolve without breaking the simulation.
Inside the pond, cells compete for limited space and energy, reproduce, mutate, share resources, and interact with neighboring cells. Starting from random data, viable self-replicating programs can emerge and natural selection takes over.
Watch evolution unfold in real time, or pause the simulation to investigate what is happening beneath the surface.

NanoPond belongs to the same general family of evolving-program systems as Tierra and Avida. Its compact, Turing-complete instruction set allows arbitrary genomes to execute safely and mutate over time, creating a fascinating evolutionary contest for survival.

This program is a port of a Java program by Thomas Abeel, who based his virtual machine on C code by Adam Ierymenko. NanoPond was used in a Computational Intelligence course at Ghent University.
