⚠️ REQUIRES A MIDI KEYBOARD
You need a MIDI keyboard or digital piano connected to your phone or tablet (USB-OTG or USB-C cable). Without one you can still use the note-identification quiz, but the sight-reading exercises cannot grade your playing. The app does not listen through the microphone and cannot follow an acoustic piano.
ENDLESS EXERCISES
A generator writes fresh material to your settings: clef, key, time signature (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8), rhythm difficulty from plain whole notes up to rests, dotted figures, syncopation and triplets, size of melodic leaps, and exercise type — melody, scale, intervals or arpeggio. Play the right hand alone, both hands in unison, or a melody over a bass line (sustained, broken/Alberti, block, waltz, walking).
A COURSE FOR BEGINNERS
The Learn tab is a guided path: 9 modules, 45 steps, from your first five notes to reading in both hands. The theory is written in your language, every step drills either a generated exercise or a real piece, and your progress is saved so the app can suggest what to practice next.
TWO WAYS TO READ
• Wait for note — the cursor waits until you play the right note, so you can learn the notes without time pressure.
• Continuous scroll — play along with the moving cursor and your rhythm is graded: on time, early or late.
Chords and both hands are checked together.
YOUR OWN SHEET MUSIC
Import MusicXML files (.xml, .musicxml, .mxl) and practice your own repertoire. Choose which hand to play, pick the instrument track to follow, or loop a range of bars until it is solid.
SEE YOUR PROGRESS
Missed notes are colored on the staff. Every attempt is saved with accuracy and timing statistics. The app remembers the notes you miss most often and can build a drill aimed at exactly those. Save exercises to a library with folders, tags and favorites, and export the whole thing as a backup file.
ALSO INSIDE
Metronome, count-in, silent practice, input-latency calibration, fingering display, an on-screen keyboard that shows expected and played notes, and a note-name quiz with a 60-second sprint mode.
PRIVACY
No accounts, no ads, no subscriptions. Your library, practice history and settings never leave your device. Anonymous usage statistics are optional and can be switched off in Settings.
Interface in English, Russian, Spanish, German, French and Portuguese. Also runs in the browser at trainpiano.app.
Recent changes:
Learn got a second tab: a reference on scales and chords. Formulas for major and the three minors, the circle of fifths, fingering, triads, seventh chords and inversions — with keyboard diagrams and ▶ buttons that generate a matching exercise right away.
Also fixed: practicing a segment inside a repeat no longer plays it twice, and the playhead sweeps the whole bar in portrait instead of crawling.
