PixelMagic takes a picture apart into a numbered grid. You pick a color, then tap or drag across every cell carrying that number. The image comes up in patches, the way cross-stitch does, and then all at once when the last few pixels land.

WHAT IS IN IT

Your own photos. Import anything from your phone, choose how fine you want the grid, and it becomes a color by number picture of your own. A dog, a friend, the view out of your window.

Eighteen background sounds. Rain on a window, a thunderstorm, a fireplace, a cat purring, ocean waves, a stream, forest birds, crickets at night, wind in the pines, a quiet cafe, pencil on paper, and white, pink and brown noise. They play under your own music instead of cutting it off.

ABOUT GETTING A CELL WRONG

Put a color in the wrong place and it stays marked as wrong. The picture will not count as finished until you go back and fix it. Some people find that irritating. Most find it is the reason finishing actually feels like finishing.

WHY PIXEL ART AND NOT ORDINARY COLORING PAGES

A coloring book asks you to stay inside a line, which takes attention. A pixel grid does not. Every cell has one right answer and a hard edge, so there is nothing to be careful about, and pixel art coloring works on a bus, half asleep, with one hand. That is what makes it useful for switching off rather than just passing time.

It also means you can put it down mid-picture. Progress is saved separately for every image, so a two-minute session costs nothing.
