► READING THE BANDS CORRECTLY
3 bands: two digits and a multiplier, tolerance ±20%.
4 bands: two digits, multiplier and tolerance – the classic with ±5% (gold) or ±10% (silver).
5 bands: three digits, multiplier and tolerance – precision resistors from ±1%.
6 bands: like a 5 band resistor plus a temperature coefficient band in ppm/K.

► PRACTICAL TIPS
- Gold or silver is almost always the tolerance band and belongs on the right.
- On faded components, use neutral light – red and orange, brown and red are easy to mix up.
- Verify the calculated value with a multimeter if the resistor was already soldered in.
- Remember Ohm's law: U = R × I. From the resistance value you get current and voltage directly.
- E-series such as E12, E24 or E96 define which nominal values exist at all – an odd value is often a misread band.

How do I read a 4 band resistor?
The first two bands are the digits, the third band is the multiplier and the fourth band shows the tolerance.

How do I read a 5 band resistor?
Three digit bands, one multiplier and one tolerance band. 5 band resistors are usually precision resistors.

Which side do I start reading from?
The tolerance band sits slightly further away from the other bands. Keep it on the right and read from left to right.

Why does my measured value differ from the calculated one?
The color code gives the nominal value. The tolerance tells you how far the real resistance value may deviate from it.
