By VrishVardhan Sharma, from Google Play“Learn Sanskrit through Gita, VSN panini derivation, authentic grammar & lessons”
Description by VrishVardhan Sharma Written by the developer, not by AppBrain. Click to read.
You learn it on real texts, read completely: the Bhagavad Gita, all seven hundred verses and every one of its 9,110 words, and the Vishnu Sahasranama and the Shiva Sahasranama. And you learn it with the works a student of the shastras uses: Panini's Ashtadhyayi with the Kashika, the Dhatupatha, the noun tables, the Amarakosha, sandhi and chandas, all inside the app and all linked to one another.
Tap any word in a verse and you get its meaning, its full grammatical analysis, and the derivation that produces it, step by step, with the sutra of the Ashtadhyayi that licenses each step. The sutra opens with its explanation; the root opens in the Dhatupatha with its forms. 8,879 of the Gita's 9,110 words rebuild exactly from their own derivation.
THE GRAMMAR LIBRARY
All of it inside the app:
• The whole Ashtadhyayi, 3,983 sutras, with the Kashika and where each sutra applies in the Gita, and the sutras recited in Vrishvardhan Sharma's voice
• The Dhatupatha, 2,259 roots with their meanings and conjugated forms
• 9,007 nominal stems with their declension tables
• The Amarakosha, 9,019 synonym groups, with the gender of every word
• 1,468 sandhi rules, each one named, and a tool that joins or splits any two words
• The metre catalogue: 59 metres described in full, a scanner that recognises 156 metre patterns, the eight ganas, and the rules of guru and laghu
• The etymology of the names in the Gita: Krishna, Arjuna, Bhishma and the rest
THE LESSONS
34 lessons in six levels, 411 sections, from the sounds of the language and where each is made in the mouth (shown in a moving side view of the mouth) to compounds, participles, taddhita affixes, the karaka system, the verb classes and reading the sutras of Panini. Every example is a real word in a real verse. 272 questions with their answers.
THE BHAGAVAD GITA
Every verse opens as the text prints it. Touch it and the line comes apart into its words, so you see where the sandhi was and what it joined. Six ways to read each verse: the word split, the prose order, the verse restated in plain Sanskrit, the joins named one by one, the case endings in colour, and the metre marked syllable by syllable.
All seven hundred verses are recited in Vrishvardhan Sharma's own voice, and the recitation is inside the app.
SHANKARA'S BHASHYA
Sri Shankaracharya's commentary on the Gita, from verse 2.10 onwards, as self-study under each verse: every word of the bhashya can be touched and looked up, and the verse's own words can be marked in it.
THE TWO SAHASRANAMAS
The Vishnu Sahasranama (142 verses, 1,000 names, with Shankara's bhashya on each name, its meaning and its derivation) and the Shiva Sahasranama of the Linga Purana (1,000 names with meanings and derivations).
LEARN BY HEART
A full-screen player for the Gita, the Vishnu Sahasranama and the Ashtadhyayi, the oldest way of learning a text: hear a verse, then say it back. Choose where to begin and end, how many times each verse is heard, a pause to repeat it, the speed, and whether the text is shown.
PRACTICE
Exercises built from the verses themselves, and review of the words you have looked at. No streaks, no points, no badges.
HINDI AND ENGLISH
Every explanation is written in both, and the grammatical terms stay in Sanskrit, in Devanagari. The Hindi is Sanskrit-nishtha throughout. There is also a Sanskrit-medium reading of each verse.
PRIVATE AND OFFLINE
No account. No sign-in. No advertisements. No tracking of any kind. Your progress stays on your device. The app goes online once, on first opening, to confirm it is a genuine copy; after that it works with no network at all, on iPhone and on iPad.
The reader is assumed to read Devanagari. No Sanskrit is assumed.
