Scale Atlas

Explore entire scale spaces — not just individual tunings.
Scale Atlas is a generalized explorer for equal-tempered scale systems. Choose an equal division of the octave, generate its distinct scale classes, search and filter the resulting space, and inspect any scale directly in cents.
Instead of being limited to standard 12-TET, Scale Atlas lets you explore scale-class spaces for arbitrary equal divisions.

Explore
Generate distinct scale classes modulo transposition for the temperament you choose. Search, filter and move through complete scale spaces instead of working only with predefined scales.
In the familiar 12-TET case, the catalogue contains 351 non-empty transposition classes. The same framework extends naturally to other equal divisions.

Analyze
Examine a scale through structural and harmonic measures including affordance, recurrence and dedicated Scale Atlas metrics.
Visual landscapes reveal how notes interact across the octave and help expose regions of stability, attraction and recurrence.

Reshape
Scale Atlas is not only a catalogue. Use tools such as Best Add and Best Move to explore nearby alternatives, modify a scale and compare different structures.

Map it to the fretboard
Display scales on a customizable six-string fretboard with freely adjustable string offsets. Explore familiar guitar tunings or build completely microtonal layouts.

Hear its character
The Scale Agent provides an audible impression of the scale you are exploring.
It generates short musical sketches directly from the scale's cent values, without forcing the pitches back into standard 12-TET. Different exploration and composition modes highlight different aspects of the same scale.
The Scale Agent is not meant to replace analysis — it adds a musical perspective to the mathematical structure.

Scale Atlas is built for musicians, composers, theorists and anyone interested in microtonality, alternative tuning systems and the structure of scales.
From scale space to structure, from structure to fretboard, from fretboard to sound.
