Description
An English dictionary that works without the internet. On the metro, on a plane, abroad without roaming.
Definitions in English, no translation: you keep thinking in English.
READ WITHOUT GETTING LOST • Don't know a word in a definition? Press and hold it to open its article • Tap Back and you're where you left off • A clean page: the word, how to say it, what it means, how it's used
MORE THAN A TEXTBOOK DICTIONARY • 200,000+ words and phrases • 250,000+ example sentences • Idioms, phrasal verbs and set phrases, under the word they belong to • Slang and informal English, with labels: (informal), (slang), (offensive), (UK) • Type "knew", get "know". Type "children", get "child" • Suggestions as you type, and the right word when you misspell it
HEAR IT • Listen to any word, with a voice installed on your phone • British and North American transcriptions, where the source has them
LEARN YOUR WORDS • Every word you open stays on the home screen • Short training cards with real examples: by definition, by example, by meaning, by ear • Words come back for review, less often as you learn them • A new word every morning as a notification, if you want it
PRIVATE • Works fully offline: the app has no internet access at all • No ads. No registration. No tracking • Your words stay on your phone • Updates come through Google Play
EASY TO READ • Light and dark themes, or your phone's • Works with large system fonts
SOURCES Built from English Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org), written by its contributors and shared under CC BY-SA 4.0. Word counts from Google Books Ngram (https://storage.googleapis.com/books/ngrams/books/datasetsv3.html), shared under CC BY 3.0, were used to choose which words to check for prepositions, to suggest prepositions and to order them. Some word-plus-preposition pairs were taken from or checked against PropBank (https://github.com/propbank/propbank-frames) and Universal Dependencies (https://universaldependencies.org/), shared under CC BY-SA, FrameNet (http://framenet.icsi.berkeley.edu), shared under CC BY, and VerbNet, under its own licence. Some definitions adapt wording from Open English WordNet (https://en-word.net/), shared under CC BY 4.0, and some were written with Open English WordNet as a reference. Details are in the app: About → Sources and licences.
Needs about 600 MB of free space: the dictionary unpacks on first launch.
