I've just started using the app a couple of days ago. I used Duolingo for a few years as it's great for starting to learn a new language. I think this app is a very good next step as it allows me to get used to reading sentences in Japanese. I can get a good understanding of a word in a sentence and how it can be used in other contexts when I press on it. The story aspect is very well done. I am thrilled to see an app which is similar in style to Duolingo while using different learning techniques.

I’ve been using Shinobi to learn Japanese, and it has really helped improve my vocabulary. 🇯🇵✨ The everyday stories help me read, listen, and remember new words, especially verbs and nouns. After each story, I answer questions to check my understanding and level up. I can really feel my Japanese improving. Compared to other Japanese learning apps, Shinobi is much more helpful and effective for me. It’s the best app I’ve found for learning Japanese! ❤️

Seems to be a good app if you need it. All the comments are saying there's a free version, but I am not able to create an account without doing a trial for the paid version. If there's a free version I want to be able to open the app without being prompted to pay after 3 days if I haven't even seen one bit of content yet. Maybe if you do try it and then cancel immediately after you can still use the app for free, but that's just an unnecessary step. Also, the AI slop is really off-putting

This app is the only one I have found with a dedicated repository of stories with which to learn Japanese with. That being said, if you are looking to be TAUGHT Japense verb forms, conjugation, grammar generally, look elsewhere unless you do best in hands on learning. Lastly, all the story visuals are AI. That may or may not be a Dealbreaker for all users, but it should be disclosed, and honestly, I would enjoy this app far more if they used real artists to illustrate the stories.

UI/UX is great. Loved the gamification and the quizzes (sort of). But expected those features to complement the content: the stories themselves which should be written and proofread by a human (accurate and natural). But here it feels like the stories are AI-generated too as part of the pipeline. The post-generation vetting (by human/another round of AI IDK) seems limited to only fixing grammatical errors and don't always flow like real human speech

No free version. Other reviews said there was a free version, but I cannot use the app at all. There is only a paywall. Even after the free trial it's only a paywall.
