The first chess engine I have played with when I'm still a teen (online) and Shredder helped me improve my play by practicing with it every day. And now it's in Android, and I'm glad I purchased it. High quality engine from Deutschland!

Excellent game with smooth customizable interface and very strong opponent. No frills, just the game with useful hints, elo rating, and no in-app purchases. I particularly love the well-designed, clean chess board and pieces. Still one of the very best Android chess apps after all these years.
★★★★★Joe Brooks· May 28, 2025
Good, strong chess program with all the essential features. The feature that lets it adjust its playing strength to your level is very handy, and it gives what I think is a pretty fair estimate of your rating based on your performance.

Its great honestly, but can u just add some feature like copy and paste PGN and also a much better analysis? It's kind of weird to see that this app lost track of the real game board movement as soon as im trying some trial and error when analyzing my game :/, I mean, make the game movement (chess notation) become "recursive-like" (look at lichens for example), and also somehow there's a really short time of freeze (most people won't notice it, but I did) when you make a move
★★☆☆☆Mr Pie 5· Mar 14, 2026
I came into this expecting that it would be coaching me on how to play better, but the extent of the teaching is that it will sometimes tell you if you make a really bad move.

I have been an enthusiastic user of both Shredder and Hi arcs for many years - they both rate my Elo around 1800??? And had anticipated giving a five-star rating but this version only works offline for a short period of time. If this is a problem for you, I have found Chess Pro and Lichens to be better options.
★★☆☆☆Shane· Apr 29, 2023
I have lowered my rating from 5 stars because Shredder chess has failed to evolve at all. Yes it's a strong engine but that's really it. Do something to make it better. For instance, when it says "that may not have been the best move. Add why? And have it explain why and what it leads to. Add more teachings like classical openings, defenses, variants and again, (a why button if you try variants), famous games library. This app is so old and has changed zero. It 100% was not worth the $7 I paid.
