By Arcadia, from Google Play“Make your own sign from a name, by five historical methods, and share it.”
Description by Arcadia Written by the developer, not by AppBrain. Click to read.
Each method says where it comes from and how sure that is: SOURCE when it stands in an old printed book, TRADITION when a named writer or order described it, MODERN when it is a later practice or our own arrangement.
FIVE METHODS
• Magic square: your name as numbers, traced from cell to cell through one of Agrippa's seven planetary squares, from Saturn's three by three to the Moon's nine by nine. The tables are Agrippa's (1533) as Barrett reprinted them (1801); the reduction is the Golden Dawn's.
• Nine chambers: Barrett's "another way of making characters, according to the Cabalists". Each Hebrew letter is written as the shape of its chamber in a grid of four crossing lines.
• Gathered letters: the letters of a name hung on one stem, the "gathering together of letters" Barrett describes in the same chapter.
• Spare's method: a sentence of intent, every repeated letter struck out, the rest fused into one design, after Austin Osman Spare (1913). Stacked, chained or radial, with another arrangement a tap away.
• Letter wheel: a line through the letters of a name on a wheel of the alphabet, with the vowels at the centre.
HEBREW, CHECKED BY YOU
A Latin name becomes a Hebrew spelling only as a suggestion, shown on a Hebrew keyboard for you to correct before anything is drawn. Hebrew is written without most vowels, and a program should not decide that for you.
KEEP AND SHARE
• Share a sigil as a PNG, export it as an SVG vector for print, engraving or a tattoo artist, or save it as a phone wallpaper.
• Frames: a circle, a double circle, or the name written around the rim.
• Mine keeps the recipe, never the picture: the method, the words and the choices, so each sign is drawn again exactly as it was.
• A home screen widget shows your last saved sigil, or the square of the planet that rules the day.
THE PENTACLES
All forty-four pentacles of The Key of Solomon the King, as S. L. MacGregor Mathers printed them in 1888, seven each for Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and the Sun, five for Venus and Mercury, six for the Moon. What each is for is quoted from the book, with Mathers' own note beside it. The SATOR square of the second pentacle of Saturn is drawn.
READ
Eleven articles: what a sigil is, the planetary squares, the Golden Dawn, the nine chambers, the gathering of letters, the Key of Solomon, Austin Osman Spare, the letter wheel, how printed seals differ from traced ones, the days and their planets, and the geometry of a seal.
