Silver Hallmarks - Maker Marks

Over 17,000 silver hallmarks for antique and modern silver: more than 6,000 British and 5,000 American, plus France, Germany, Mexico and Scandinavia. Checked against trade catalogues and assay-office records. Bring a punch and identify the hallmark in seconds.

In the hands of dealers, jewellers and estate buyers since 2012.

What you get

• Browse 17,000+ marks four ways: by letter, by object, by animal, or by shape. Whichever lane matches the punch in front of you.
• American silver covered properly. Gorham, Towle, Wallace, Reed & Barton, Tiffany, coin silver, and 249 Navajo and Native American smiths that most references leave out.
• British date letters for London, Birmingham, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Chester, Dublin and Glasgow. Pin the exact year a piece left the assay office.
• Maker's marks show town, working years and metal standard at a glance. Useful when you are telling a Hester Bateman from a 1920s revival.
• Sterling or plate, settled fast. EPNS, EPBM, Britannia, 800 and 900 laid out side by side. The question every estate sale turns on.
• Snap a punch on a spoon, a teapot or a piece of jewelry and match it against the reference library on your device. You get a shortlist ranked by similarity, then confirm against the full record.
• Plain-English glossary of 123 trade terms. Assay, duty mark, lion passant, sterling, Britannia, town mark, date letter.
• Save what you own. Photograph a piece, tag it, log what you paid, and keep it backed up with your Google account.

The reference library lives on your device, so a cellar with no signal is as good as a desk.

Buy a piece with confidence, or pass on it knowing why.

The date letter decoder now tells you who made a piece. Pick an office and a year, type the initials on the punch, and see the makers working there at the time.

Beside each date letter you also get the full set of marks a piece from that office and year should carry, and the ones that would be wrong for that date.

Date letters now reach back to each office's first recorded cycle, with Exeter, Newcastle and York added. The app also lets you know when an update is ready.
